Everything I Wish I Knew Before Studying Abroad in Sydney

Studying abroad in Sydney sounds like a dream, and don’t get me wrong, it totally is. Beaches! Accents! Tim Tams! But there’s also a whole world of “wait… what?” moments no one preps you for.
Whether you're days away from departure or deep in the decision spiral, here are the things I really wish someone had told me before I boarded that long-haul flight to the land of sun, slang, and surf.
1. You’ll be jetlagged for longer than you think
No, seriously. Don’t plan a beach day or a party your first 48 hours. You’ll fall asleep at dinner. It’s fine. Australia is so far from the U.S., your body needs time to catch up.
2. Sunscreen is a religion here (and the sun will humble you)
The UV index in Sydney is no joke. You need SPF 50+ every day, even when it's cloudy. And no, your “moisturizer with SPF 15” isn’t going to cut it. Trust me.
3. You won’t need that many fancy outfits
Everyone’s style is beachy, breezy, and casual — even when they’re out to dinner. Save the suitcase space. Prioritize layers, comfy sneakers, and basics.
4. Groceries are… weirdly expensive
A single bell pepper can cost $4. Like, one. Meal prep is your friend. Also: Aldi is a lifesaver. Stock up on snacks from there, then treat yourself to Aussie faves like Woolies bakery runs.
5. Their slang is basically another language
Arvo? Macca’s? Keen? You’ll pick it up quickly, but expect to be confused for the first few weeks. It’s like Duolingo but for casual conversation.
6. Public transport is good… but kind of quirky
Sydney’s Opal card system is solid, but the buses rarely come when Google Maps says they will. Also: tap on and off every time, or you’ll get charged extra.
7. Housing can make or break your experience
Where you live totally shapes your Sydney life. Want beach mornings? Bondi. More nightlife? Newtown. Close to campus? Kensington. Do your research (or check out our housing guide for all the suburb tea).
8. You’re going to spend more than you expect
Sydney is expensive. Even with budgeting apps and good intentions, you’ll blow through a little more than planned. Plan for wiggle room and learn where to save (our budgeting guide helps with that).
9. You don’t need to book every weekend with trips
It’s tempting, but don’t forget to enjoy Sydney too. Some of your best memories will come from beach days, chill nights with your housemates, and random café finds.
10. You’ll outgrow the “tourist” version of yourself (in the best way)
At first, you’ll be taking photos of everything — but soon, you’ll know which bus gets you to Coogee, how to order a flat white like a local, and where to find the cheapest sushi rolls on campus. You’ll live here. And that’s the coolest part.
Bonus: You’re going to want more help than Google can give
Between visas, packing, phone plans, classes, nightlife, and trying to not look lost on campus, you’ll have questions. That’s why we created Study Abroad Sydney: your go-to hub for real, student-tested guides that make life abroad easier (and way more fun).
