Don’t Pack These: What You’ll Regret Bringing to Sydney (and What You’ll Wish You Had)

Text says "DON'T PACK THESE: What You'll Regret Bringing to Sydney" on an orange, patterned background with kangaroo sign and Sydney Opera House.

Because no one wants to haul three suitcases of “just in case” only to wear the same five outfits and forget a power adapter.

Packing for your study abroad semester feels like preparing for a fashion show, a beach vacation, and a zombie apocalypse all at once. But here’s the truth: you’re going to bring too much and still forget the important stuff (been there, overpacked that).

So before you zip that suitcase shut, here’s your reality check: what you don’t need, what you’ll wish you packed instead, and how to avoid the classic study abroad suitcase regrets.

What NOT to Pack (Seriously, Leave These Behind)

1. A full winter wardrobe

Sydney’s winters are mild. Think 50s–60s°F, not snowstorm. One good jacket, a couple sweaters and you’re good. Leave the parkas, snow boots, and fuzzy socks army at home.

2. Heels you never wear at home

You’ll walk a lot. Think hills, public transport, beach paths. Nights out are casual and even clubs lean toward sneakers and chunky boots. If you never wear heels in your college town, don’t start now.

3. Full-sized hair tools

Your U.S. curling iron won’t work here (even with a converter — voltage is different). Buy a dual-voltage or wait and get one here if you really need it. Or embrace the air-dry beach wave era.

4. Half your “just in case” clothes

You will not suddenly become a person who wears blazers, vests, or six different pairs of jeans. Pack your go-tos and call it a day.

5. Bedding + towels

Not worth the suitcase space. You can get cheap bedding bundles at Kmart or Target in Sydney for under $40 AUD. Bring a travel towel at most.

6. Excess skincare/makeup

Australia has amazing skincare brands (Mecca, Go-To, Bondi Sands, MCoBeauty) and you’ll want to try them. Bring your essentials, but don’t haul 5 serums unless your routine is sacred.

7. Textbooks

Heavy and outdated fast. Wait to see if you need them. Most unis have digital or library access. Some professors even say “don’t bother.”

8. Reusable water bottles that leak

Just trust me. Upgrade to a sturdy, leakproof bottle because Sydney’s water is drinkable and you’ll use it constantly.

9. Fancy purses or designer bags

They’ll sit in your closet. The go-to bag is crossbody, nylon, and rain-friendly. Save your Longchamp for Paris.

10. Too many “USA” shirts

You’ll stick out. Aussies are chill, and while repping your school is fine, don’t overdo the Stars and Stripes energy. A couple shirts max.

What You’ll Wish You Brought Instead

1. Universal power adapter (with USB-C ports)

You need this day one. Bonus points if it has multiple plug types and surge protection. Don’t rely on the airport to have them in stock.

2. A light, waterproof jacket

Sydney weather changes fast. You’ll want something breathable but reliable, especially during those surprise rainstorms between classes.

3. Comfortable walking shoes

You’ll rack up 10k+ steps a day without trying. Sydney = stairs, hills, and transit gaps. Invest in sneakers or comfy sandals (Birkenstocks are big here).

4. A small going-out bag

Bonus points if it zips. Great for concerts, beach days, or nights when you don’t want to carry a backpack.

5. Polaroids, photos, or room décor

You’ll want your space to feel like you. Bring a little something from home, even a mini collage or string lights, to make your dorm/apartment feel cozy.

6. Medicine you actually use

Especially U.S. brands that aren’t easily available in Australia (like NyQuil, melatonin, Midol, allergy meds). Local pharmacies are great, but don’t assume you’ll find your exact go-to.

7. A printed copy of your important docs

Yes, even in 2025. Flight confirmations, visa letters, housing info. You’ll thank yourself if your phone dies.

8. A sturdy tote bag or backpack

For class, groceries, day trips. Foldable or stylish, just make sure it’s durable and comfy.

Final Packing Wisdom

You don’t need to bring your entire life with you. You’re going to a modern, global city where you can find almost everything and probably discover new faves along the way.

Pack light, pack smart, and leave space for the new version of you that’s coming back. (Oh, and for Tim Tams.)
